According to the associate, El-Rufai spent the period fasting, studying, and reading extensively while in custody. He reportedly completed the Holy Qur’an, read at least ten books, and even engaged in writing during his detention.
The disclosure was made shortly after El-Rufai regained freedom from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), where he had been held since February 2026 over allegations related to financial misconduct.
Reports indicate that the former governor was arraigned on multiple charges, including alleged conversion of public property and money laundering, to which he pleaded not guilty. The court subsequently adjourned hearing on his bail application.
El-Rufai’s release came amid personal tragedy, as he was freed hours after the death of his mother in Egypt. The development drew sympathy from several prominent Nigerians who sent condolence messages to the former governor and his family.
The account of his time in detention portrays a period marked by reflection, discipline, and intellectual engagement, even as his legal battles continue.
