These are estimates — actual pages depend on your document's font, size, and margins, and actual speaking time varies by person and pauses. Everything is calculated locally in your browser.

About this tool

Words to Minutes Converter estimates how long a speech or presentation will take, based on how many words it has and how fast you speak. It is useful when you have a time slot, such as a 5-minute talk, a 3-minute pitch or a wedding toast, and you want to know how long your script should be.

It works both ways. Enter your word count to get an estimated time, or use a time and work out how many words you can fit.

How to use it

  1. Enter the number of words in your script, or paste the text if the tool allows it.
  2. Choose or adjust your speaking speed.
  3. Read the estimated speaking time.
  4. Trim or add to your script until it fits your time slot.

Example

You have 5 minutes and speak at roughly 130 words per minute. That is about 650 words. If your script has 800 words, you will go over, so cut it down or speak a little faster.

Tips

  • Slow down for important points. Add a little time for pauses, slides and questions.
  • Read your script aloud once with a timer. The estimate is a guide, and your own pace is the real test.

Questions people ask

What speaking speed should I use?

Many people speak at around 120 to 150 words a minute when presenting. Choose a pace that feels natural for you.

Does it count slides or pauses?

No. It only works from words and speed, so allow extra time for those.

Is it accurate?

It is an estimate. Practise once out loud for a better idea.

Can I use it for a video script?

Yes. It works for any spoken script.
