Plateau Youths Storm Govt House Over Rising Killings, Demand Urgent Action
Residents of Plateau State, particularly youths, on Wednesday staged a protest at the Government House in Jos over the escalating insecurity and persistent killings across communities.
The demonstrators, under the aegis of the Plateau Youth Coalition and other affiliated groups, expressed deep frustration over what they described as the government’s slow response to the worsening security situation in the state.
Carrying placards with inscriptions condemning the killings, the protesters said the continued attacks have left residents living in fear, noting that even security operatives are no longer safe from ambushes by armed groups.
Speaking during the protest, a youth leader lamented that the recent killing of security personnel in Kanam Local Government Area has further heightened concerns, stressing that civilians now feel completely vulnerable.
The group also raised alarm over reports that armed elements displaced from other troubled regions may be relocating to Plateau, thereby worsening the crisis and increasing attacks on both rural and urban communities.
Women representatives at the protest decried the humanitarian impact of the violence, stating that families have been displaced while many women and children continue to suffer the consequences of the ongoing attacks.
The protesters called on the Plateau State Government to urgently address the situation and forward their demands to the Federal Government for immediate intervention. They also urged authorities to strengthen security measures and protect lives and property across the state.
Although top government officials were reportedly absent at the time of the protest, the youths vowed to return and sustain pressure until concrete action is taken to end the killings.
The demonstration comes amid renewed concerns over insecurity in Plateau, with repeated attacks leading to loss of lives, displacement of residents, and destruction of property in several communities.
