Okinbaloye Fires Back at Wike, Says He Will Not Be Intimidated
Popular Channels Television anchor, Seun Okinbaloye, has declared that he is not afraid and will never be intimidated following controversial remarks made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Okinbaloye made this known during a live broadcast on Sunday, where he addressed the growing reactions trailing Wike’s comments. He expressed appreciation to Nigerians, civil society groups, and international organisations for their overwhelming support, noting that their solidarity reinforces a shared commitment to truth and accountability.
The journalist, however, warned against attempts to silence dissenting voices, stressing that such actions could pose a serious threat to democracy. According to him, a system that discourages opposing views risks undermining the nation’s democratic foundations.
Clarifying his earlier position, Okinbaloye stated that his comments were not targeted at any political party but were meant to address national concerns. He added that democracy thrives when all citizens are allowed to freely express their opinions without fear.
Reacting directly to the controversy, he said, “Let me be clear, I’m not afraid, and I will never be intimidated,” reaffirming his commitment to ethical journalism and holding those in power accountable.
He also revealed that he had received reassurances regarding his safety from security agencies, while noting that Wike had reached out to clarify that his earlier remarks were not intended as a threat. Despite this, Okinbaloye cautioned public officials against using inflammatory language, particularly during sensitive political periods.
The controversy stems from comments made by Wike during a media parley in Abuja, where he criticised Okinbaloye’s remarks on a Channels Television programme discussing opposition politics and the possibility of a one-party state ahead of the 2027 elections.
While the minister’s aide later described the statement as hyperbolic, the incident has continued to generate reactions, with rights groups warning that such rhetoric could endanger press freedom and encourage hostility toward journalists.
Okinbaloye concluded by reiterating his resolve to continue asking critical questions and performing his duty as a journalist, regardless of pressure or intimidation.
