The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party has ratified the schedule for its primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections. The decision was made during a statutory NEC meeting on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, observed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The approved timetable includes: submission of the membership register to INEC by April 15, 2026; governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly primaries on May 15, 2026; and the presidential primary on May 23, 2026.
NEC also ratified the conduct of Ward, Local Government, and State Congresses scheduled for March 26, 28, and 31, 2026, respectively, and the National Convention slated for April 11, 2026.
The council reviewed internal party disturbances, including an alleged invasion of the Party Secretariat by hoodlums. Acting on the recommendations of the Peace, Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committee chaired by Comrade Salisu Mohammed, NEC approved the suspension of 28 members for acts of indiscipline, anti-party activities, and complicity in the desecration of the National Secretariat.
In a move to modernize the party, NEC also approved the expansion of the membership register using both digital e-registration and manual registration in rural areas. This initiative aims to strengthen participatory democracy and enhance transparency in party administration.
Finally, NEC resolved that all existing vacancies within party structures shall be temporarily filled through interim leadership to ensure continuity in administration.
