FIFA President Infantino Proposes Red Card For Players Who cover Their Mouths During Confrontations

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has suggested that players who cover their mouths while speaking during on-pitch confrontations should be shown a red card, particularly in situations linked to racism.

Infantino argued that deliberately hiding one’s words raises suspicion and should carry consequences. According to him, there should be a presumption that a player who conceals his mouth while speaking may have said something inappropriate — especially if the exchange results in racist allegations.

His comments come after claims that Gianluca Prestianni of Benfica racially abused Vinícius Júnior of Real Madrid during a UEFA Champions League playoff first-leg clash, allegedly while covering his mouth.

European football’s governing body UEFA has opened an investigation into the incident. Prestianni has already been suspended for the second leg, and if found guilty, he could face a ban of up to 10 matches.

Speaking to Sky News, Infantino stated that if a player covers his mouth and makes a comment that leads to racist consequences, he should be sent off immediately. He stressed that stronger action is needed to combat racism in football.

FIFA is now considering introducing new measures ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Discussions are expected at the next meeting of the International Football Association Board, with possible approval at the upcoming FIFA Congress in Vancouver.

Infantino also hinted that encouraging apologies could influence disciplinary outcomes, as part of broader efforts to improve football’s culture and reinforce the fight against racism.
