The trial of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), took a new turn as a Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that the bail previously granted had lapsed following the reassignment of the case.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) filed a 16-count charge against Malami, alleging money laundering and unlawful acquisition of assets valued at over N8.7 billion.
During the proceedings, Malami, his son Abdulaziz, and his wife Asabe pleaded not guilty.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik held that previous proceedings cease to have legal effect when a matter is reassigned, directing the defence to file a fresh bail application.
The court adjourned the case until March 6 for the hearing of the bail application and commencement of trial, remanding Malami and his son at the Kuje Correctional Centre and his wife at the Suleja Correctional Centre.
