The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has confirmed that discussions are ongoing with the Federal Government’s renegotiation team led by former Head of Service, Yayale Ahmed, as the union’s two-week warning strike enters its seventh day.

ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, revealed in a statement on Sunday that the talks have yielded progress on five out of the union’s seven key demands, including the payment of promotion arrears, the mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), and the release of third-party deductions.

He noted that the negotiations also cover updates on the renegotiated 2009 agreement, which outlines improved working conditions, university funding, and staff welfare under a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) framework.

The union stated that the ongoing strike, which began a week ago, was to push the government to honour long-standing commitments that affect not only lecturers but also the quality of education across Nigeria’s public universities. Many campuses across the country remain shut, disrupting lectures, research, and exams.

Prof. Piwuna commended ASUU members for their unity and resilience, urging them to rely only on verified information from branch chairpersons as talks progress. He emphasized that the strike is not just about wages but about reviving the Nigerian university system to meet global standards.

For Fundpeeps, this development reflects the deeper need for sustainable investment in education, which directly influences innovation, youth empowerment, and national productivity. Each day of disruption impacts thousands of students — delaying their academic growth, professional dreams, and the nation’s human capital pipeline.

As conversations continue between ASUU and the Federal Government, Nigerians — especially students and educators — are hopeful that the dialogue will yield lasting solutions that restore stability, strengthen institutional trust, and reaffirm education as the backbone of national Development.
