Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, has urged Nigerian leaders to embrace value-driven, transformative leadership that prioritizes the nation’s collective interest over personal or political gains.

Jega made the call during the presentation of a new book titled “Transformative Leadership in Practice”, written by the Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, as part of events marking his 60th birthday celebration.

Speaking at the event, Jega stressed that Nigeria’s development and democratic progress would remain elusive without leaders who embody integrity, courage, and a genuine commitment to service.

“This book provides evidence that transformative leadership is not a theory — it works,” Jega said. “Prof. Sulaiman’s work at NILDS proves that when vision meets courage, even a public institution can evolve into a centre of excellence. We cannot keep lamenting weak institutions while rewarding mediocrity. Leadership must be guided by service, not self-interest.”

Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by the Special Adviser to the President on Job Creation, Mr. Johnson Adekunle, praised Sulaiman’s legacy, describing him as a mentor dedicated to grooming future leaders and strengthening institutions. “His leadership shows how vision and mentorship can drive national development,” Shettima said.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Muhammed Adoke, hailed Sulaiman as an institution builder who brought structure and professionalism to public administration.

“Though he joined the National Planning Commission towards the end of my administration, his impact was immediate. He introduced reforms, efficiency, and accountability — values our institutions need today,” Jonathan said.

Also speaking, former Senate President Ahmad Lawan commended Sulaiman for redefining NILDS as a hub of knowledge, innovation, and professionalism, describing him as “a reformer who turns ideas into action.”

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, noted that Nigeria’s challenges are rooted not in a lack of intellect but in a deficit of integrity. He applauded Sulaiman for exemplifying honesty and discipline in leadership.

“He is a man of empathy, humility, and discipline — a professor in leadership as much as in politics. Nigeria’s renewal depends on leaders who live by such values,” the monarch said.

In his response, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman expressed gratitude for the show of love and encouragement, saying the goodwill messages would inspire him to do even more for the nation and humanity.

“I’m deeply touched by these kind words. They motivate me to continue contributing my best to national growth and development,” he said.
