In a surprising twist that has thrown Bayelsa politics into fresh uncertainty, Governor Douye Diri has officially parted ways with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), signaling what many believe could be the beginning of a major political realignment in the South-South region.

The governor’s announcement, made earlier today at Government House, Yenagoa, came with an air of finality and confidence. Although he did not immediately disclose his next political destination, sources close to the state assembly say several lawmakers have already pledged allegiance to him, suggesting the move was long in preparation.

“This decision is for the progress and peace of Bayelsa State,” the governor reportedly told journalists, emphasizing that his choice was guided by “the interest of the people” rather than partisan loyalty.

Political observers say Diri’s exit may not be an isolated incident. It follows closely on the heels of Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State’s defection from the same party, a development analysts describe as a “chain reaction” among key PDP figures seeking new political alliances ahead of 2027.

Governor Diri, a teacher-turned-politician and former senator, first came to power in 2020 through a historic Supreme Court ruling that overturned the initial election result. Since then, he has been viewed as a stabilizing force in Bayelsa’s governance, but his latest move indicates he may be charting a new course for both himself and his supporters.

Political watchers now speculate whether the Bayelsa leader will pitch his tent with the All Progressives Congress (APC) or rally support for a third-force coalition, a decision that could redefine the power balance in the Niger Delta.

As Bayelsans and Nigerians alike await his next announcement, one thing remains certain: the political tide in Bayelsa is shifting and fast.
